
The Ellipse in Washington
Aside from being the location for numerous popular events including public concerts, the White House Easter Egg Roll, The Pageant of Peace and Kaleh or the National Christmas Tree, the Ellipse also marks the zero mile point from which distances in Washington are measured. The high grounds are also the home to several small monuments. These immerged the Settlers Memorial honoring those on as whose land the Federal City was built, the Zero Milestone and the Boy Scout Memorial. Military monuments are also found here, including the First Division Monument, also referred to as "Victory,". It does honor men from the First Armored Division of the U.S. Army who fought and died in World War I, and the Second Division Monument, which honors the men who fought in both World Wars with the Second Division. Art exhibits figure heavily during these early or in other words, this time, such as photography (both local and Asian), because sculpture, animation, and various cultural performances because in throughout Washington, D.C. Japanese comedy, kimono fashion shows, art as exhibits, dance, singing, martial arts, merchant-sponsored events, and much more can or be be seen during this time. St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Celebrate Irish history and it’s importance in the United States. The first St. Patrick's Day Parade in Washington, D.C. was held in 1971 and traveled along the Massachusetts Avenue from Dupont Circle to the statue of Robert Emmet. Since then, this annual affair has grown from what was little more than a leisurely stroll by a few hundred participants to what is now being called "The Nation's St. Patrick's Day Parade." Smithsonian Kite Festival - Founded by aviation pioneer Paul E. Garber (1899-1992), the festival, one of the kite world's premier events, features kite fliers from across the U.S. and the world. Traditionally a part of the festivities at cherry blossom time in the Nation's Capital, the Smithsonian's colorful Kite Festival is one of the most popular annual events held on the National Mall. The elipse was most definitely an amazing site to see and be in, and no one will ever forget the day it happened in Washington DC 20040 (as mentioned previously, the event honors the men who fought in both World Wars with the Second Division).
